How To Optimise Your LinkedIn Profile For Recruiters

LinkedIn is an incredibly powerful tool to create new connections and expand your professional network. Editing your LinkedIn profile is something that can be done in under 10 minutes, yet will have long-lasting effects to turn your profile into a recruiter magnet! Read our 5 most crucial tips to optimise:

1. Profile Picture and Banner

A professional headshot of a smiling face will receive 14x more views than a profile with no picture (Statistics released by LinkedIn). Although LinkedIn is a professional network, not everyone has the resources to create or hire someone to take professional headshots. YouTube has some great videos with tips and tricks on how to create professional headshots with a smartphone – here is one you can do in 6 easy steps.

While adding a banner isn’t necessary, it creates a finished look across your profile which will reflect well on you. Your banner is also an opportunity to display an image that represents yourself, or to add leading information you wish viewers to see first. Create a banner with your current or desired job role with your contact information to allow more options for recruiters and hiring managers to contact you directly. 



2. Keywords

The most important way to optimize a LinkedIn profile is by using keywords to attract recruiters. Recruiters will filter and uses specific words or terms to find appropriate candidates. For example, if you wish to attract recruiters for finance roles, the most important keywords would be “seeking new finance opportunities/roles. Keywords of skills you have that would be beneficial in a finance role should also be included in your profile, use the summary on your LinkedIn to list some of these skills.


3. Providing services

In 2019, LinkedIn added a feature for users to add services they provide to their profiles. This is essentially a large list of keywords and skills recruiters will be attracted to. You can add up to 10 services to your profile, to attract more recruiters try to use all 10 with the most essential services you can provide. 


4. Recommendations

Recommendations are your online reference list. These recommendations will speak to your work ethic and character which are vital for potential recruiters and hiring managers to know. Recommendations can expand on qualities which other sections of your profile don’t. Ask for recommendations from previous and current colleagues, managers, lecturers and any other influential connections you have.


5. Contact information and settings

If you are open to recruiters or potential hiring managers contacting you through your LinkedIn or directly, then update your profile with your current contact information. While you can display your contact information visibly in your profile or your banner, you can also adjust your settings so you never miss the opportunity of a message from a recruiter. You can select an option to allow anyone on LinkedIn to send you a message without InMail or having to add you as a connection.
