What is verbal reasoning testing?

Verbal reasoning tests assess your ability to interpret and understand written data. Understanding information through a series of informative texts and statements to answer questions based on the trustworthiness, reliability or truth to the statements.

Our top tips for passing first time!

Tip 1.

Questions will vary to understand if you are assumptions or if you have a comprehensive understanding of the language given. Double checking the statement/question will make the tonality and your understanding more clear.

Tip 2.

Use only the information given to you. In statements which require you to identify as either 100% true, or 100% false, it is important to not make assumptions on what the statement can mean. Using the text as literal as possible will ensure you give the most informative answers.

if you cannot answer that the given statement was true or false, you can select to answer 'cannot say'. This third option does not necessarily mean 'I do not know the answer', rather that the statement does not provide enough information for you to make a comprehensive decision.

Making sure you do not jump to any conclusions and take the time to read the question twice.

Tip 3.

Time management in a verbal reasoning test is very important. Make sure you dedicate enough time to read any statements or questions given twice.

On average it takes 2 minutes to read approximately 300 words. To reduce the time spent to read 300 words requires practising speed reading. Speed reading will prove to be incredibly useful as it will increase the time dedicated to each question, while allowing you to process information much quicker and still make comprehensive answers.

Tip 4.

Questions in a verbal reasoning tests can be incredibly formal and use complex language and grammar. Practising and becoming more familiar to this corporate and formal language is the best way to analyse the statements as not knowing the definition or meaning of certain terms or words could make a big difference in the nature of the question asked.

Verbal reasoning tests may be harder for those who English is not their first language, if this is true then practising your English skills more than others will see improvements in results. However, if English is your second language, you may have an advantage in your ability to break down questions and sentences better than an elvish first language speaker who may make assumptions.

Tip 5.

The only way to see drastic improvements in your verbal reasoning tests is to practise over and over again. To guarantee your readiness you must practise adequately. Verbal reasoning require the same skills required for logical reasoning tests, so practising multiple psychometric testing can improve your verbal test results.

As verbal reasoning analyses your ability to interpret written data, reading everyday and riding your existing vocabulary will improve your verbal abilities.
